Chemical Verses Mineral Sunscreen-All you need to know about Sunscreen this summer!!!
I always say sunscreen is an essential part of a morning skincare routine that’s because of its a primary cause of ageing it causes wrinkles, dark spots and you know what also it can cause cancer and that what I am going to talk about pros and cons of chemicals available in sunscreen.
Before I start I would like to tell you the difference between UVA & UVB as we all heard this lots of time in our life when we talk about Sunscreen. Last but not Least also SPF
UVA= Ageing – Unprotected exposure can lead to premature skin ageing and wrinkling (photoaging), and suppression of the immune system.
UVB=Burn-UVB rays will usually burn the superficial layers of your skin.
SPF-SPF means Sun Protection Factor using this equation. Multiply this number by the SPF of your product. Example: with an SPF 15 x 20 minutes of sun time = 300 is how many minutes you can stay in the sun without burning. 300 minutes divided by 1 hour of 60 minutes = 5 hours of sun protection without a sunburn.
Mineral Sunscreen- They either made of Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide or a combination of both the way I explained that they work is they sit on top of your skin and physically block the UV rays. So think of it they almost sit on your skin as a shield and reflex the light off of your skin and that’s what I tell people not to wear mineral sunscreen if they are going to be on camera because if you have a light on your face while clicking picture or making video its going to reflect a lot on camera.
A few notes about the mineral sunscreens ingredients a zinc oxide tends to be a little bit more gentle and little less irritating and covers both UVA & UVB rays whereas titanium oxide covers mostly UVB rays but not necessarily UVA rays this much if you are looking for sunscreen for kids I suggest you to go for zinc oxide one because its more gentle on skin and safe for kids.
Note- As per the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) only Zink & Titanium Oxide is the only ingredients which have been approved to be 100% safe.
Pros of Mineral Sunscreen-
100% Safe as per FDA
Start protecting immediately you will apply on your skin
Less likely to clog pores as compared to chemical sunscreen
Cons of Mineral Sunscreen-
Wipes off easier (If you constantly putting something on your skin it will wipe off)
Less water resistant ( It last for 40 min maximum )
White Cast On Darker Skin Tones (It can change the colour of your skin on darker skin tone. If you are darker skin tone then I suggest you go for tinted sunscreen)
Chemical Sunscreen-The way to think about chemical sunscreen that how they work is to invasion them like a sponge that they soak up UV rays and then there is a chemical reaction what happens they turn UV rays into heat and try to dispense out from your skin.
Pros Of Chemical Sunscreen
Soak up UV rays and releases from the skin as heat.
Spread Easily- They feel lighter on the skin and spread easily on your skin and that is why people love it to use this on a daily basis.
No White Cast- It leaves no white cast on any skin tone is the biggest pros of such sunscreen.
Common in skin care product – As on a daily basis people use products which contain a chemical component.
Cons Of Chemical Sunscreen
Potentially Toxic-Lot of people say it can be very toxic for your skin but as per FDA all other ingredients in Chemical sunscreen has been approved which makes it balanced well no Idea if FDA has done proper research or it require more research on that.
Can Cause Irritation- As it’s chemical and it can be a little bit more irritating and if you have sensitive skin it can be a little bit harsh on your skin for sometimes.
Be Wary Of Oxybenzone & Octinoxate- These two ingredients can affect your thyroid and reproductory system but it requires lot more research to find our either it’s really bad for your health.
Chemical Scent- It really doesn’t bother me but for some people, it’s actually a big deal for some people the fragrance.
TIP-Sunscreen can no longer be waterproof it can only be water resistant.
Buy Sunscreen based on your lifestyle and the duration you being out in the sun
8 hours of Blue light = 1 Hours under the sun
Look for SPF 30 at the minimum but don’t go any higher by SPF 50 as you need to reapply it no matter what as the higher the SPF is the more chemical ingredients your skin will face and absorb
Keep It Chic, Keep It Stylish
Love You All XOXO
